What is Air-cow?

Air-cow is an air cushion lifting system for animals that can no longer stand. This patented device was designed and developed by practicing veterinarian Pierre Schoenaers.

It is a pneumatic medical device for cattle that, due to trauma or illness, have partially or completely lost the ability to move and/or stand.

The device can be used for:

rehabilitation;
administering treatment;
moving the animal.

All under optimal conditions for the animal's safety and welfare.

Why use Air-cow?

In everyday veterinary practice, conditions regularly occur that leave an animal partially or completely unable to move or stand.

In these situations, the animal's own weight works against her, leading to:

fatigue and difficulty remaining upright;
reduced or fully stopped feed and water intake;
metabolic disorders;
weakening, pressure sores and muscle degeneration.

Often the original condition has been treated successfully, but complications from prolonged recumbency can still prove fatal. Having to euthanize an animal that has recovered from the original condition is a particularly difficult outcome.

Air-cow helps limit complications caused by mobility problems and increases the chances of recovery by allowing the animal to receive proper care in optimal welfare conditions.

Three methods

How is Air-cow used?

The deflated cushion is slid under the recumbent animal and then inflated with the compressor within a few minutes.

The animal is placed into the cushion once it has already been inflated and closed.

The already-inflated cushion is slid under the animal.

Whichever method you choose, a few essential rules must always be followed:

protect the hooves;
secure the hind legs;
attach the animal to the cushion at the withers and head using the straps provided for this purpose;
stabilize the cushion in its surroundings.

Once the animal is placed in the Air-cow cushion, periodic monitoring is sufficient and continuous supervision is not required. The system can be used both on the farm and in a veterinary clinic.
